Article Abstract:
Most women can still have a vaginal hysterectomy even if they have a large uterus, have never had children, or have had a previous cesarean delivery or pelvic laparotomy. During a vaginal hysterectomy, the surgeon pulls the uterus out through the vagina rather than through an abdominal incision.

Article Abstract:
Total hysterectomy may be preferable to subtotal hysterectomy in women at low risk for cervical cancer. Total hysterectomy includes removing the cervix while subtotal hysterectomy leaves the cervix. Researchers reviewed the medical literature for studies comparing total versus subtotal hysterectomy and calculated the probabilities of complications. Rates of infection, hemorrhage, and injury to adjacent organs were similar with either type. Also similar were death rates from surgery, rates of developing cervical or vaginal cancer, and rates of long-term problems with sexual function or bladder control.
