The principles of bone marrow and stem-cell transplantation

Article Abstract:

Higher doses of radiotherapy and chemotherapy can now be used to treat non-blood cancer patients due to the more widespread use of stem-cell and bone-marrow transplants. The stem cell is the vital cell in transplantation, with stem cells sourced from umbilical cord blood, the peripheral blood and bone marrow. A donor transplant may be required for patients with a marrow that has been infiltrated by a malignancy or for those with a haematological malignancy. Failure of engraftment is a major risk.

Lymphomas: aetiology, classification and treatment

Article Abstract:

The vast majority of lymphomas (malignant tumours) arise within lymph nodes, but lymphoid tissue can accumulate in the gut, known as Peyer's patches, and in the skin. Hodgkin's disease (HD) refers to specific lymphomas, which, in 65% of cases, involve the cervical nodes. Treatment can involve local or generalised radiotherapy. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma are divided into low and intermediate grades which behave like chronic leukaemia, and high grade which behave like acute leukaemia.

Lymphocytic leukaemia: classification and treatment

Article Abstract:

Acute lymphocytic leukaemia (ALL) and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) both involve circulating lymphocytes. ALL typically presents in children between the ages of two and three and diagnoses is established on the blood count and film. Children are more likely to survive when treated in specialist centres. CLL is a disease of later life and the majority are not suitable candidates for bone marrow transplants.
