Stephen Moss, who is a Chief Nurse in Nottingham, England, and also chairs the Trust Nurses' Association, maintains that improving patient care is the most important aspect of his work. He aims to achieve this by facilitating inter-professional communication of good practice, and by easing communication between nurses and managers. Moss believes that the nursing profession has the opportunity, at the end of the 1990s, to influence health care policy and delivery, and is keen to see this occur. He is also keen to facilitate the promotion of more women to top nursing posts.

The place of nurses in the debate between doctors and politicians on the management of the health service is discussed. Government plans to reform the health service and change the role of nurses are examined.
