The in vivo contamination of air-driven low-speed handpieces with prophylaxis angles

Article Abstract:

An in vivo study was conducted to find out if low-speed handheld motors can become contaminated with bacteria when used with prophylaxis angles. Two kinds of handpieces and three prophylaxis angles were used to polish the teeth of 20 subjects and then samples were collected, spiral-plated specimens and then incubated. Findings indicate that the internal surfaces of low-speed handpieces can become contaminated with oral flora when used with prophylaxis angles.
