The changing face of teenage drug abuse - The trend toward prescription drugs

Article Abstract:

Mass communication through multimedia has increased awareness of prescription drugs among teenagers, and these drugs can be more dangerous than the street drugs as they do not recognize the dangers and the general perception is that these are largely safe. Educators and parents must address the potential dangers of prescription-drug abuse with teenagers while physicians need to discuss with their adult patients, who have teenage children, the risks associated with controlled drugs and the need to restrict the availability of such drugs at home.

Uncovering an epidemic--Screening for mental illness in teens

Article Abstract:

There is a silent epidemic of mental illness among American teenagers, the majority of which goes unrecognized and untreated, leaving them vulnerable to emotional, social, and academic impairments during a critical phase of their lives. Suicide is the third-leading cause of death among teenagers in the US, a situation that argues strongly for early detection and intervention and provides a rationale for mental health screening among teenagers so that the primary risk factors can be identified and treated.

Violence and mental illness--How strong is the link?

Article Abstract:

New surveys of many murder cases reveal the fact that the rates of violence among the patients with mental illness or the rates of mental instability among the people, arrested or convicted for any violent crime is very high which imposes a threat on the people around them. Hence it becomes very challenging for the medical practitioners to be aware that the patients they deal with possess some risk of violence and hence should always treat such patients in locations with adequate security and assistance.
