The changing face of continuing medical education
Article Abstract:
Continuing medical education (CME) for physician assistants (PAs) can encompass both medical and nonmedical forms of education, but medical education is most important for recertification. In the future, PAs may be able to get CME credit through courses and tests via the Web or CD-ROMs. Professional journal quizzes have become less useful in obtaining credits under revised CME standards. The emerging world of telemedicine, the CME cycle, hours requirements, and related issues impacting PAs are also discussed.

HIV infection and AIDS: a reality check
Article Abstract:
A round-table discussion of the progress and future of AIDS prevention is presented. Many participants favored early sexual education at the grade school level emphasizing self-esteem building and simple facts in age-appropriate language as the most effective prevention approach. Primary care providers can use the office visit as an educational opportunity. Social and economic implications of universal or targeted testing were addressed.

Program proliferation
Article Abstract:
Physician's assistants (PA) and educators discuss the increasing number of PA programs and their effect on the professions' reputation and standards. While the overall growth may be beneficial, there are concerns that rapid development could lead to overcrowding in the profession or dilution of quality in training programs. Concerns over competition in the PA market are also addressed.
