The aimlessly empowered
Article Abstract:
The true meaning of empowerment is simply that employees are given the power and support from management that necessary to do their jobs. Often the management rhetoric of empowerment is regarded as hypocritical. Empowerment should be associated with organizational goals, however. 'Laissez-faire' management represents an attempt to operate without managers, which results in a poorly functioning organization. Managers are needed to provide the infrastructure for employees.

Ethical leadership in the health care industry will emerge when physicians, therapists, pharmacists, transporters, CFOs and administrators no longer allow themselves to be victims of circumstance. The lean, mean management of the profiteering nineties must be replaced by morally sound health care services. Access, deployment, quality and continuity are not strategic options, they are moral choices.
