Task force hearing shows there's still no consensus on reform

Article Abstract:

A Mar 1993 public hearing of Pres Clinton's task force on US healthcare demonstrated that there is still much dissension on how to accomplish desired reforms. The panels at the hearing included physicians, small-business owners, insurers, chiropractors and nursing home executives. The physicians testified against cost controls and made several alternative suggestions, including a plan of setting up individual medical savings accounts for each person and letting them negotiate for medical services. Hawaii's medical plan was suggested as an excellent model.

Putting out the flames that threaten medicine

Article Abstract:

Physicians can effect change in the health care system. Issues that need to be addressed include affordable health care, the bureaucracy associated with government agencies and managed medical care, an unregulated insurance industry and high jury awards. The reform of the healthcare system must begin with physicians educating insurance companies, government and the public about the complexities of medical care. Physicians should also develop guidelines to help improve the healthcare system.

Once ridiculed, choice of geriatrics now seems visionary

Article Abstract:

The practice of geriatrics offers physicians many benefits. Geriatricians have the chance to share in the diverse experience of their patients as well as the unique opportunity to observe interesting symptoms which don't normally occur in younger patients. Physicians in this field obtain more satisfaction because they can experience more patient gratitude, get out of the office for a few hours for home visits, and learn more about medical administration.
