Strategies for stemming the tide of antimicrobial resistance

Article Abstract:

More research is needed to determine the appropriate duration of treatment when prescribing antibiotics. Studies have shown that treatment for more than five days with lower than normal doses of the antibiotic can encourage the development of drug-resistance in the bacteria. The longer the bacteria are exposed to the drug, the more likely they are to develop resistance to it. However, there is little research on the appropriate length of treatment. The most important change that can be made immediately is to stop prescribing antibiotics for conditions that do not respond to these drugs.
