State boards urged to tighten control over telemedicine

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates approved at its 1996 annual meeting a measure that urges that physicians who practice telemedicine be licensed in the state in which their patients are located. The AMA also would like to see state licensing boards create special licensing standards for physicians who practice telemedicine across state lines. The measure urges that all states create a unified approach to this new and growing field to prevent the possibility of federal regulation.

The ABCs of e-mailing patients

Article Abstract:

E-mail has moved into the realm of physician-patient correspondence, raising legal and right-to-privacy questions. Doctors are divided over whether this kind of e-mail is properly part of the medical record. In the absence of legal guidelines, physicians are advised to consider it as such. The alternative is to limit correspondence to simple questions or include a disclaimer in messages that are discarded.
