Spreading the word

Article Abstract:

The student support network set up by the Assn of Nursing Students' (ASN) Wessex region is aimed at combating the isolation which many nursing students feel. Often there is little local communication between nursing students. The student forum enables students from different colleges to meet and discuss issues which affect them all. It also provides students with a collective voice. The forum aims not only to spread information from the national ASN to local areas, but also to ensure that local issues are given sufficient representation at the national level.

Parents shouldn't have to do our job

Article Abstract:

Children's nurses have a responsibility to ensure they give parents the opportunity to take regular breaks, eat nutritious food and spend time with their other children when in hospital. Many parents feel exhausted after spending a long amount of time in hospital with their child as they consider they have to be there all the time otherwise their child may not receive the full attention of nursing staff. It would be appropriate for nurses to discuss fully with parent the needs of both themselves and the child when deciding caring plans.

Hit and miss deal needs a rethink

Article Abstract:

Nurses pay, working conditions and hours need to be improved if the recruitment drive carried out by the UK government to attract a greater number of people into the profession is to succeed. More people are now applying to become nurses although retention levels will need to be kept high in order to maintain the required numbers of nurses needed to operate the National Health Service adequately.
