Article Abstract:
Carers provide a significant amount of the care in the community in the UK, but the carers are often vulnerable. They may be elderly people looking after other old people, for example. This situation jeopardizes the care system. It is vital to consider the needs of the carers when establishing continuing care programmes. Carers who have to provide care beyond their capabilities suffer stress which could lead to abuse. Nurses are in a good position to determine the limitations of the carer, and to offer appropriate support.

A change in practice
Article Abstract:
Resources could be used more effectively by coordinating HIV/AIDS and genitourinary medicine services in sexual health units. Available statistics indicate a close connection between sexually-transmitted diseases and AIDS. Coordination would facilitate the development of common education courses. Mutual support services would relieve stress on health care professionals. Exchange of ideas would aid research and service development. Genitourinary medicine could also benefit from resources allocated to AIDS research.

Age-old concerns
Article Abstract:
Hospital care for the aged is being threatened as elderly patients are being placed in residential and nursing homes in the community. With the elderly population growing, by the year 2026 one in five people will be over 65 years old, services should be expanding not retracting. Nurses in the community or in a hospital have a duty to emphasize the special needs of the elderly and to act as patients representatives in demanding adequate and appropriate care.
