Spinal Manipulation in the Treatment of Episodic Tension-Type Headache: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Article Abstract:

Spinal manipulation does not appear to be effective in treating tension headache. Researchers randomly assigned 26 men and 49 women with tension headache to have spinal manipulation and massage or placebo laser treatment and massage. All participants received 8 treatments over 4 weeks, from the same chiropractor. No significant differences between the groups were observed in frequency and duration of headache, headache intensity or use of painkillers.

Management of Chronic Tension-Type Headache With Tricyclic Antidepressant Medication, Stress Management Therapy, and Their Combination: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Article Abstract:

Tricyclic antidepressants combined with stress management therapy may be effective in treating chronic tension headache. Each is also effective by itself, but combination therapy appears to be more effective than either one alone.

A 47-Year-Old Woman With Tension-type Headaches

Article Abstract:

The natural history, diagnosis, and treatment of tension-type headache is reviewed. Tension-type headache is very common, but only 3% of Americans experience it on a chronic basis.
