Smoking and its effects on early-onset periodontitis

Article Abstract:

Smoking appears to increase the extent and severity of periodontal disease in patients with generalized early-onset periodontitis (G-EOP) or adult periodontitis (AP). Periodontitis is an inflammation of the tissues that support a tooth. Researchers assessed the smoking status and the extent and severity of periodontitis in 776 people who had healthy periodontium (HP), adult periodontitis (AP), or forms of EOP. Smoking was approximately twice as common among people with G-EOP or AP compared to those with HP or localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP). Smokers with G-EOP or AP had significantly more teeth affected with periodontal ligament attachment loss and greater average levels of attachment loss than patients with G-EOP or AP who did not smoke. Smoking did not affect the extent or severity of periodontal disease in patients with LJP.

Assessing periodontal disease risk: a comparison of clinicians' assessment versus a computerized tool

Article Abstract:

The Periodontal Risk Calculator developed by Dental Medicine International may be better than a dentist's personal judgment for identifying people who have risk factors for periodontal disease, according to a study of 52 dentists and periodontists and 107 dental patients. There was a large variation in the risk factor scores assigned by the dentists and periodontists. This could result in treatments for people who don't need treatment.

Direct association between cardiovascular disease, periodontal bacteria found

Article Abstract:

Study finding indicating positive relationship between presence of periodontal disease causing bacteria and thicker carotid arteries in older adults is reported. Dental plaque samples and carotid intima-media thickness measurement was used to evaluate the association.
