Article Abstract:

Controversy surrounding the UK's high-security hospitals at Broadmoor, Ashworth and Rampton has led to many observers expressing doubts about the role of these establishments in the future provision of forensic mental health services. These hospitals have become isolated from mainstream health services, and have often not moved patients into less secure environments when it has become appropriate to do so. They also find it extremely difficult to recruit and retain staff. It would be better to close these hospitals and establish a fully comprehensive forensic service for each region.

A cure for student malaise

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the funding of nursing students in the UK are discussed. It is suggested that consideration should be given to establishing a stakeholder structure to manage and fund student education. This would enhance the status of nursing students within both universities and the National Health Service.

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are becoming more available to health care assistants (HCAs). This means that HCAs will be able to undertake more nursing-related roles. Nursing practice could be enhanced with the use of auxiliaries and assistants who have undertaken training linked to NVQs.
