New therapy for ovarian cancer

Article Abstract:

A 1996 study suggests that combination chemotherapy with paclitaxel and cisplatin is the most effective means for initially treating advanced ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer is typically treated with surgery followed by chemotherapy. Generally, women receive 6 cycles of chemotherapy, but more cycles may be more effective. Women who respond to chemotherapy often have relapses that may or may not merit further treatment. However, treatment may improve with the development of new drugs. The 1996 study found that cisplatin and paclitaxel led to longer survival than cisplatin and cyclophosphamide. Although the former treatment caused significant side effects, these effects were manageable. More research is required to establish the optimal dosage of this combination and to test other combinations.

Laparotomy versus peritoneal drainage for necrotizing enterocolitis and perforation

Article Abstract:

Multicenter randomized trial is conducted to compare the outcomes of primary peritoneal drainage with laparotomy and bowel resection in preterm infants with perforated necrotizing enterocolitis. The results have shown that the type of operation performed for perforated necrotizing enterocolitis does not have any influence on the survival or other clinically important early outcomes in preterm infants.
