The creation of the groups protecting human subjects involved in clinical gene therapy trails in the United States is discussed. The author discusses an effort of a group considered by many researches as hostile and obstructive to re-establish itself as an oversight committee for the gene therapy trails.

William Hurlburt, a Stanford University ethicist, generated a buzz among the scientists in December 2004 when he suggested genetically or chemically altering human embryos, as they cannot develop beyond the blastocyst stage. By doing so, scientists could pursue research without violating federal rules on embryonic stem cell research.
