After the final whistle: A nurse sacked in the Beech House abuse scandal has been defended by one of the patient's relatives

Article Abstract:

An inquiry by Camden ad Islington Community Health Services NHS Trust into patient abuse at Beech House, a ward in St Pancras Hospital, concluded that older people with mental illness were abused by nurses, tied up, denied fluids and deprived of sleeps. However one of the nurses implicated by the inquiry has received support by the relatives of a patient. The problems appear to have originated in 1993, with problems transferred when the unit was transferred from Friern Barnet Hospital. The trust has now made major changes so that whistleblowers can come forward.

Safe as houses

Article Abstract:

There is a lack of continuity between acute care of the mentally ill and continuing care of them. Statistics from programs in Italy, the UK and the US indicate that effective community based care reduces the level of involuntary admission to acute psychiatric hospitals. Services have to be developed to satisfy changing demands. Nurses are those who can best help set up community-based centres of psychiatric care. Examples of services in the US, Italy, and Birmingham, UK, are presented.

Safe as houses

Article Abstract:

Young children and old people are most vulnerable to accidents in the home. District nurses should encourage accident prevention strategies. A preliminary home survey could indicate possible dangers. An individual's health and lifestyle is also relevant. A care plan can include recommendations for creating a safer environment. The district nurse should call on related disciplines in health promotion.
