Risk of bacterial meningitis in children with cochlear implants

Article Abstract:

Cochlear implants used to treat hearing disorders can cause bacterial meningitis in some children, especially if the implant contains a positioner that pushes the electrode against the cochlea. In a study of 4,264 children who had a cochlear implant, 26 developed bacterial meningitis. This is 30 times higher than the rate among children in the general population. Cochlear implants that contain positioners were recalled in the US in July, 2002.
