Nursing research should not be accepted as correct but should be distrusted and scrutinised. Valid research is obscured by assumptions that all research is true. Practitioners should become aware of the practice of research as well as its findings. Research is considered a separate topic to nursing in the examination system, with facts taught separately from ward-based nursing. Research has taken over the control of nursing practice from dominant individual ward sisters. Most practitioners are unaware that nursing practice is largely research-based.

Article Abstract:
A nurse from St Bartholomews'Hospital, London, England disputes the allegation that London has too many hospital beds but agrees that primary care should be improved. Closing central London hospitals will remove centres of excellence. Provincial hospitals are unlikely to develop the skill and expertise necessary to cope with unusual cases. Closure will also limit Londoners' access to acute health care.

A model for the future
Article Abstract:
New nursing information technology (IT) models should address care planning. Previous IT models have concentrated on aspects of general management. However, care plans are the major patient care information source. Spread sheets and graphics are inappropriate for presenting nursing information. The new model must reflect the dynamic nature of nursing practice.
