Replacing PEG tubes

Article Abstract:

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tubes are now the preferred method for enteral feeding of patients in a large number of different specialities. They avoid the disadvantages associated with nasogastric feeding, and are also reported to be better tolerated by patients. Some complications, including stomal leakage and wound infection, are associated with PEG tubes. Research in this area has analyzed the techniques used and indications for PEG tube insertion, nursing management and complications. It identified a number of issues, including the need to assess the condition of the stoma and the surrounding skin.

Clinical supervision can only be effective if both the supervisor and the supervisee are fully prepared for the supervision process. It is important to be aware that clinical supervision demands time, energy and commitment, and that patience and listening skills are required. The supervisor and the supervisee must agree on the frequency of meetings and where they will take place, and must set the parameters of supervision. At a later stage, the supervisor and the supervisee should consider the need to analyze ways of measuring the effectiveness of the supervision relationship.
