In Quebec a parliamentary committee has a controversial bill under consideration which has the physicians' unions outraged. Robert Weinman, MD, was the leader of a study session on Bill 27. He feels the Bill would force physicians to give up a great deal of power to the provincial government. Pierre Marc Johnson, the minister of Social Affairs, feels the Bill would make physicians more accountable.

A study by American Medical News shows that many medical care programs sponsored by state governments are in severe financial trouble. Almost twenty states responded to the study which showed that many are reducing the money spent on health, safety and other medical programs in their states.

Ward Bentley, a former executive director of the American College of Preventive Medicine, took an early retirement and started the Children of the Americas, a non-profit foundation, in Bogota, Columbia. The foundation provides medical care for abandoned street children.
