Preparing to heal
Article Abstract:
Much older physiology research data remains valid and could help to guide current nursing practice. One example is research into wound healing and pre-operative psychological preparation which indicates that psychological stress has a serious effect on wound healing. Patients need to understand events in order to reduce anxiety, but repetition of information is essential as anxiety blocks comprehension. Nurses should use previous research findings to add to their knowledge and to show that their practice is research-based.

The nursing princess
Article Abstract:
World War 1914-1918 enabled King George V's daughter, Princess Mary, to train as a nurse. She joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment established in 1909. She helped organise staffing of overseas VAD hospitals but was prevented from working in France until 1918. She continued nurse training at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, London, England. She gained respect of hospital and VAD colleagues through enthusiasm and hard work.
