Article Abstract:

Midwife, Linda Fox, is going to set up a Sure Start programme in Sheffield, United Kingdom, using money from the government. The scheme will focus on pre-school children and will offer parents advice and information on any child-related issues such as breast feeding or helping with reading. The money may be used to buy a mobile playground and a bus. The ideas for the bid were gathered from the local people themselves and from community groups. Women on the estate will be trained to mentor other new mothers. Five health visitors and a midwife are involved in the project.

The Foreign Office has covered up the circumstances surrounding the death of British nurse Helen Smith in Saudi Arabia in 1979, according to her father, Ron Smith. He believes that this was done in order to protect relations between the two countries. He is now calling on the government to re-examine the evidence of the case, but is not very optimistic about uncovering the truth. His campaigning has already led to a change in the law, ensuring that an inquest is held in the UK if a British citizen dies abroad.

Explaining the risk of keeping it in the family

Asian families who practice arranged marriages are being urged to consider issues of intermarriage in a bid to reduce the risk of congenital disabilities. Genetic counselling is being offered by the Bradford Health Authority, targetted at Bangladeshi and Pakistani communities who are at the highest risk.
