Career planning

Article Abstract:

Nurses need to consider their career path and make professional preparations at various stages in their career. They should always have a career plan, to which they should adhere, but also be a little flexible. They need to consider when to specialize, and this may influence their first post choice. They will need to study job advertisements to gain insight into required qualifications and experience, and they may decide to undertake further training. Nurses who take a career break should keep their registration, and may need to take a further course before returning to work.

A hard return for your money

Article Abstract:

A UK government survey has indicated that 19,500 former nurses would like to return to the profession. This sort of data, together with a change in regulations governing registration renewal, has encouraged a proliferation in return-to-practice nursing courses. However, uptake has been low. The poor response may be due to the cost of courses, one example being 760 pound sterling for a 16-week course, but costs are often refundable. Another problem could be inflexibility in teaching hours and lack of child care provision.
