Palliative and Hospice Care Needed for Children With Life-Threatening Conditions

Article Abstract:

The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued recommendations for improving the provision of palliative care to dying children. In 2000, Congress allocated $1 million to develop children's hospice care demonstration programs in several states. These efforts developed after a study showed that 89% of dying children suffered from at least one symptom in their last month of life.

Green Light for Federally Funded Research on Embryonic Stem Cells

The US National Institutes of Health has released guidelines for researchers who want to study stem cells from human embryos. Federal funds can only be used to study stem cell lines created with money from private sources and the guidelines include many restrictions.

New Alzheimer disease target identified

One of the main causes of Alzheimer disease is a deposition of amyloid-beta in the brain. An international team of researchers are working on providing a potential new target for treating the brain damaging disorder.
