The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued recommendations for improving the provision of palliative care to dying children. In 2000, Congress allocated $1 million to develop children's hospice care demonstration programs in several states. These efforts developed after a study showed that 89% of dying children suffered from at least one symptom in their last month of life.

The US National Institutes of Health has released guidelines for researchers who want to study stem cells from human embryos. Federal funds can only be used to study stem cell lines created with money from private sources and the guidelines include many restrictions.
