Overcoming resistance

Article Abstract:

Nursing homes in the Netherlands have successfully overcome patients' objections to mechanical lifting devices. Most patients appreciated that manual lifting could be injurious to nurses. However, lack of confidence caused resistance to the use of hoists. A publicity campaign aimed to change attitudes to equipment by emphasising greater comfort and safety. Patient assessment included the formation of individual lifting protocols. Nurse training ensured confident use of hoists. Gradual introduction of equipment allayed patients' fears.

The right equipment

Nurses should use mechanical aids for the safe lifting of patients. Advice on equipment selection is available from the Disabled Living Foundation and The Disability Information Trust. The Department of Health Medical Devices Directorate also assesses and publishes information on equipment. Building design should take account of spacial needs and be ergonomically orientated. Regular maintenance and servicing is essential. Nurse training should cover a range of handling equipment.

It is important that UK hospitals and institutions choose the correct bedding for people with special needs. In such settings, bedding must conform to British standards, such as fire-safety. A Department of Health-funded exhibition of continence products at Manchester's Disabled Living Centre, displays a wide range of bedding products, including bedding protection for enuresis sufferers.
