Observations on the development of stunting in children of the Khon Kaen region of Thailand

Article Abstract:

The factors determining linear growth were studied in a cohort of children followed up from birth to two years of age. A significant linear growth deficit was seen with an average standard deviation of minus two. Children coming from stunted families with stunted sibs had larger deficits compared to those with normal sibs. There was no genetic predisposition for stunting among Thai children and dietary intake data revealed a deficiency of calcium instead of protein.

The growth of Malawian preschool children from different socioeconomic groups

Article Abstract:

Asurvey of 1,272 preschool children aged above 2 years in Malawi, Central Africa, helped illustrate that the growth constraints of these children is more due to environmental influences than due to genetic factors. Children from high income families were 6.6 and 9.2 cm taller than children from mediocre and poor families, respectively. Differences in growth in children from different socioeconomic backgrounds persisted with age.
