Nutritional considerations in children undergoing bone marrow transplantation

Article Abstract:

Bone marrow transplantation can lead to a decline in nutritional status in both adults and children, with symptoms including oral mucositis, steatorrhea and anorexia. It is becoming more widely recognized that parenteral nutrition may not be the best treatment for giving nutritional support to cancer patients. Enteral nutrition (EN) has been found to be less expensive, more physiological and simpler to administer. Recent research indicates that glutamine supplementation of EN cuts the incidence of bacterial translocation and boosts nitrogen balance.

Tumour regression following chemotherapy does not increase food intake

Article Abstract:

The nutritional status of forty-six patients with cancer of the breast, ovary and lung were evaluated after starting cyclical chemotherapy to determine whether changes in food intake were related to treatment response. It was shown that nochanges in anthropometric status related to treatment response and that protein intake in treatment responders p-albumin increased significantly compared to pretreatment value. It was further proposed that initial chemotherapeutic treatment is not necessarily followed by improved nutrition.

Dietary intake in patients with small cell lung cancer: the effect of aggressive chemotherapy

Article Abstract:

Thirty-two patients with small cell lung cancer were examined for protein and energy intake at the start of cyclical chemotherapy and after one and three months to evaluate the effect of aggressive chemotherapy on dietary intake. Results of the study show that weight-losing patients had lower post treatment energy intake compared to weight stable patients. These results suggest that weight loss is associated with later resumption of habitual food intake.
