Nurse, heal thyself

Article Abstract:

Nurses can use their experience of illness to improve their nursing skills by gaining greater understanding of what it means to be a patient and thus treat their patients in more appropriate ways. Illness leads to vulnerability, high anxiety levels and exaggerated fears, but it also means that kindness from nursing staff and friends is remembered and appreciated. People who claim never to be ill can lack the understanding that illness can bring to those in the nursing profession.

Water, water everywhere

Article Abstract:

Some 22,000 families in the UK had their water disconnected in 1992, of which over 50% were too poor to pay their bills. Over 50% of disconnections are not notified to local authorities despite this being a legal requirement. There were nearly twice as many dysentery cases in 1992 vs 1991. The problem needs to be acknowledged and health visitors and nurses should become involved in addressing the situation.

Foundation for success

Article Abstract:

A nursing student describes what the Project 2000 common foundation programme, which concentrates on health as opposed to disease, has to offer. It includes innovative ideas in nursing practice, such as a therapeutic approach to mental health nursing, but it is limited in that it does not encompass all branches of nursing equally.
