No room for complacency

Article Abstract:

The early detection of pre-eclampsia is an important role of midwives, as it is a life-threatening condition which should be constantly monitored. A survey of UK antenatal services found the checking of urine for pre-eclampsia had fallen below government recommended targets. Up to 10% of all pregnancies are affected to some degree by pre-eclampsia, with up to 10 mothers dying from the condition each year in the UK. The unpredictable nature of pre-eclampsia means all pregnant women are potential suffers, therefore midwives should monitor symptoms closely.

Risky complacency

Article Abstract:

A survey by London's Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre has revealed that 15 health authorities are ending routine school tuberculosis (TB) immunisation despite a 4% infection increase from 1988-1991. Authorities feel justified if local TB infections are declining. Most prefer targeting high-risk groups. However, many professionals feel withdrawing school immunisation is premature as drug resistant TB strains are occurring in America and a connection between HIV and TB infections may exist.

Proceeding with caution

Article Abstract:

Amendments to the Nurses', Midwives' and Health Visitors' Bill will mean that nurses can be cautioned before the UKCC's conduct committee and it could speed up investigations into misconduct cases. The current professional conduct policy, which can remove a practitioner's right to practise, was felt to be too extreme.
