Naturally occurring immunomodulation: SIV infection in sooty mangabeys

Article Abstract:

The relationship between viral replication and [CD4.sup.+] T-cell homeostasis during primate lentiviral infection was discussed and studies of the natural nonpathogenic SIV infection of sooty mangabeys (SMs) are reported. SIV infection in SMs is an important 'experiment of nature' that provides clues to the role played in vivo by various pathogenic mechanisms that are postulated to contribute to the HIV-associated immunodeficiency.

Increased viral replication in Simian immunodeficiency virus/Simian-HIV-infected Macaques with self-administering model of chronic alcohol consumption

Article Abstract:

A study on the precise effect of alcohol addiction on HIV pathogenesis is designed to determine the effect of alcohol dependence on virus replication and CD4 profiles in simian immunodeficiency virus/simian-HIV-infected rhesus macaques. The extent of CD4 cell loss in the alcohol group is significantly higher than in the control animals at week 1 after infection.

Simian immunodeficiency virus infection of hematopoietic stem cells and bone marrow stromal cells

Article Abstract:

Fetal rhesus monkey model is used for examining the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and stromal cells that will help in the characterization of the bone marrow abnormalities in SIV-infected animals in vivo. The results confirm that SIV can infect the bone marrow stromal cells.
