New York's Mount Sinai Health System plans a strategic alliance with New Jersey's Barnabas Health Care System. The two systems will remain financially and administratively autonomous but will share development of clinical initiatives, academic affiliation, and other activities. They will bargain together for purchasing and services such as laundry and hope to market corporate and other health services together.

Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp's legal troubles do not appear to be changing hospitals' plans to join the chain. A federal criminal investigation of Columbia began on Mar 19, 1997. On news of the probe, Columbia's stock price fell precipitously, triggering an investor lawsuit. Despite those developments, hospitals that had planned to join Columbia are not backing away from those plans.

Tenet HealthcCorp. is looking to consolidate its position as the second- biggest publicly-traded hospital company following its acquisition of OrNda HealthCorp. Tenet plans to do so not by expanding into new markets, but rather by further expanding its holdings in markets in which it already owns hospitals and other health care entities.
