Mixed patterns of changes in central and peripheral fat following initiation of antiretroviral therapy in a randomized trial

Article Abstract:

Changes in regional fat measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and circumferences over 64 weeks in HIV-infected individuals initiating their first antiretroviral regimen are examined. A mixed pattern of changes in central and peripheral fat over the first 64 weeks after initiation of antiretroviral therapy is observed and the changes were correlated positively, as were changes in waist and hip circumferences.

Alendronate, vitamin D, and calcium for the treatment of osteopenia/osteoporosis associated with HIV infection

Article Abstract:

A 48-week prospective, randomized, open-label study is conducted to evaluate the effects of alendronate, vitamin D, and calcium supplementation on bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with HIV infection. Alendronate, vitamin D, and calcium are safe and potentially useful in the treatment of osteopenia/osteoporosis associated with HIV infection.

Long-term body fat outcomes in antiretroviral-naive participants randomized to nelfinavir or efavirenz or both plus dual nucleosides

Article Abstract:

Long-term regional body fat outcomes in randomized antiretroviral drug trials of the combination of zidovudine, lamivudine, and efavirenz showed no overall pattern suggesting limb fat loss over time and was significantly superior to the pooled zidovudine-lamivudine-nelfinavir (with and without efavirenz) arms.
