The format the HSE's Accident Prevention Advisory Unit has provided for safety management gives a key role to management from the highest level on down. An examination of serious industrial accidents suggests that upper management's grasp of safety policy has been inadequate. HSE's management booklet HS(G) 65, 'Successful health and safety management,' with its focus on management's responsibility for health and safety policy, suggests that this inadequacy is being addressed.

Extensive technical experience is a very good background for work in health and safety, according to Mike McGinley, life vice-president of the Strathclyde Health and Safety Group. Any health and safety professional must be able to look at difficulties from all perspectives, but must always be aware that dealing with people is the most important role. Many companies now have a strong moral commitment to health and safety, and this is a trend which is to be welcomed.

Motor ways

Article Abstract:

Keith Cheshire, retired Chief Safety Engineer at Ford Motor Company believes that trade unions in the company have a good influence on health and safety generally and that the motor industry in general is investing much on pro-active safety. He feels that the Motor Industry Safety Group has helped to develop guidance on safety controls.
