Article Abstract:

A genitourinary unit has used Lewins' approach to adapt nursing practice to a new model. The infection control nurse was change agent. Change to Roy's model involved three stages. During the first stage nurses evaluated existing practice and explored the need for change. Any potential difficulties were discussed. The second stage involved implementation of the model. Stage three involved stabilisation of new practices. Nurses were involved at all stages to minimise resistance to change.

A new way forward

Article Abstract:

A genitourinary unit has adopted Roy's model of nursing practice to facilitate psychological and physiological assessment of HIV patients. The model facilitates greater understanding of stress factors and coping procedures. Detailed examination of physiological condition, self-perception, role and interdependence assist care planning. Gradual exploration of the four modes allows more sensitive treatment of HIV patients.

Isolating the reason

Article Abstract:

A decision by an infection control nurse to place a patient in isolation needs to be based upon assessment of risk. It is important to decide whether routine basic practices will be sufficient or whether the immediate population is at risk. Caring for patients in isolation places pressure on staff.
