Lowering the threshold for the diagnosis of gestational diabetes

Article Abstract:

Lowering the blood glucose levels diagnostic of gestational diabetes does not appear to affect outcomes. Researchers applied two sets of lower diagnostic thresholds proposed by other researchers to a population of 434 women who had an oral glucose tolerance test. Lowering the thresholds would select a group of women who were heavier on average than women identified as gestational diabetics by current standards. Maternal weight, not glucose level, was associated with increased numbers of high-birth-weight babies and cesarean sections. Therefore, lowering thresholds would label more women as gestationally diabetic without affecting outcomes.

Sequential use of instruments at operative vaginal delivery: is it safe?

Article Abstract:

It appears to be safe to use more than one delivery technique during childbirth, according to a study of 34 pregnant women. Some obstetricians use vacuum extraction first, and then forceps to complete the delivery. This can make a forceps delivery easier.

Oral nicardipine versus intravenous magnesium sulfate for the treatment of preterm labor

Article Abstract:

The calcium channel blocker nicardipine appears to be effective in stopping premature labor. In a study of 122 pregnant women in premature labor, the drug was more effective than magnesium sulfate, which is also used to stop premature labor.
