Know how: female catheterisation

Article Abstract:

Female catheterisation is traditionally been undertaken without the use of a local anaesthetic gel. However, the use of an anaesthetic lubricating gel should be considered, to reduce risk of trauma. A Foley catheter should be used of indwelling catheterisation, and choice of material should depend on whether the catheter will be for short or long term use. The patient should be informed about the varying urine drainage bags available, and the procedure should be explained.
