Article Abstract:
Day care centers with tall pieces of playground climbing equipment appear to have increased rates of child fall injuries. Researchers interviewed 1,740 day care center directors to study playground-related injuries, safety regulations, and regulatory enforcement. During the two-month study period, a weighted total of 89.2 injuries occurred from playground-related falls. An estimated 2,700 playground-related child fall injuries would have occurred in all US day care centers during this time period. The height of the tallest piece of playground climbing equipment was the most significant risk factor for fall injuries. Regulations governing playground surfaces and safety were not associated with reduced injury rates. Unannounced playground follow-up inspections were significantly related to a lower risk of fall injury.

Article Abstract:
Children riding in bicycle-towed trailers or bicycle-mounted child seats should wear helmets. Between 1990 and 1998, 43 child injuries related to bicycle-mounted child seats were reported to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission for 1990 to 1998 and 6 child injuries related to bicycle-towed trailers were reported. Falls and collisions with a car were the most frequent cause of injury. Injury to the head and face was most common, accounting for 83% of all injuries in bicycle-towed trailers and half of all injuries in bicycle-mounted child seats.

Article Abstract:
Data from child care centers can help doctors develop injury prevention programs. In a survey of 362 preschoolers at four urban child care centers, 1,886 injuries occurred in a two-year period. Over 80% of the injuries occurred during play and 87% were minor. Over half were caused by child-related factors such as pushing and did not involve play equipment. Boys were more likely to be injured than girls.
