Increasing patient service by effective use of dental hygienists

Article Abstract:

An expanded role for dental hygienists may provide greater job diversity, lower treatment costs, and allow dentists to concentrate on procedures that require their expertise. Most hygienists devote the majority of their time to cleaning and polishing teeth. These well-educated practitioners can provide additional services within the confines of the law. They may be assigned responsibility for handling diagnostic data collection appointments, tooth desensitization, x-rays, home fluoride applications, and bleaching discolored teeth. Hygienists' duties may include taking preoperative photographs, monitoring patients who grind or clench their teeth, and applying sealants. Patients should pay lower fees for services rendered by hygienists because these dental workers are not responsible for overhead costs.

Developing a great dental team

Article Abstract:

Effective delivery of dental care requires a cohesive team working alongside the dentist. Members of the team include hygienists, assistants, and office staff, as well as vendors, laboratory staff and other professionals outside the office. The dental team functions best in a positive, trusting atmosphere where each member feels confidence, satisfaction, and mutual respect. Continuing education, regular praise, and fair compensation are important for every employee. A leader open to change and responsive to the staff may enjoy a more productive and profitable practice.
