Is body fat topography a risk factor for breast cancer?

Article Abstract:

Body fat distribution as measured by waist-to-hip ratio may not be related to the development of breast cancer. Upper body fat distribution, which corresponds to a high waist-to-hip ratio, has been associated with chronic diseases such as diabetes, coronary artery disease and stroke. Lower body fat distribution, which corresponds to a low waist-to-hip ratio, has been observed in healthy populations. Of 313 women who had an undiagnosed mass removed from their breast, 156 had breast cancer, 126 were considered of average risk for breast cancer and formed the controls and 31 were considered to be at high risk for breast cancer. Waist-to-hip ratio was found to be the same in all three groups. Furthermore, when women were grouped according to waist-to-hip ratio, there was no trend toward breast cancer incidence nor any differences in breast cancer incidence among the women.

Progestins and breast cancer

Article Abstract:

More research is needed to determine whether progestins can cause breast cancer. Progestins are one of the components of hormone replacment therapy. According to the Women's Health Initiative study, hormone replacement therapy caused an increased risk of breast cancer. But laboratory studies have not been able to show that progestin causes breast cells to turn cancerous.
