Article Abstract:

Society, which for the most part neglects schizophrenics and treats them as outcasts, needs to be educated about schizophrenia. It is an illnes which attacks people from all ethnic groups and classes regardless of intelligence, but can be exacerbated by environmental and social circumstances. Schizophrenics suffer strange thoughts, visions, and voices, and can be lonely. The illness is treated mostly by drugs, sometimes neuroleptic drugs, which whilst relieving symptoms can have side-effects, programmes to modify behaviour, electro-convulsive therapy, and long-term hospitalisation. Community care is offered, but its policies do not succeed on all levels. Schizophrenics need love, attention and time, and the opportunity to express themselves.

Article Abstract:

The care of schizoprenics in the community, which is becoming more common, is discussed. Nurses now need to know more about the illness, and its treatment. About 1% of the population risk developing the illness, which is attributed to hereditary and environmental causes. Care has to be adapted to individual needs, with importance being placed patients becoming more self-sufficient, self-confident and self-controlled. Nurses are highly involved in adminstering and managing medication and preventing the patient's relapse.

Family matters: relatives of people with diagnoses of schizophrenia often experience considerable stress and feelings of guilt

Article Abstract:

Studies have found that if relatives of patient's diagnosed with schizophrenia become too emotionally involved, the symptoms can be exacerbated, perhaps leading to a relapse. It was found that there are positive effects of providing relatives with information, developing their stress management skills and improving communications.
