Health care on the hill--Democrats set the agenda

Article Abstract:

The enactment of an ambitious policy agenda that reflects the interests of middle-class and working-class Americans will be a daunting challenge for the Democratic legislators who are energized by their new majorities in the 110th Congress. The agenda includes two health issues, which would empower Medicare to negotiate prices of prescription drugs directly with manufacturers rather than through private health plans and expand federal support for embryonic stem-cell research.

The goals and recommendations of the final report of the President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health are described. The commission reported that the US mental health care system was in shambles and made 19 recommendations for reforming the system. Mental illness is the most common cause of disability in the US.
