Guidelines for assessing and managing the perioperative risk from coronary artery disease associated with major noncardiac surgery

Article Abstract:

The American College of Physicians presents recommendations for evaluating the risk of heart complications among prospective surgical patients. These recommendations cover major elective surgery. A baseline risk assessment tool called the Cardiac Risk Index should be used on all prospective surgical patients. No further tests are needed for low-risk and intermediate-risk patients undergoing non-vessel surgery. Imaging and stress tests may better evaluate risk among intermediate-risk patients undergoing vessel surgery. Underlying heart problems should either be corrected or identified in prospective high-risk patients.

The effect of age on the risk for complications and death after noncardiac surgery

Article Abstract:

Older patients who have surgery are more likely to develop complications than younger patients who have the same surgery, according to a study of 4,315 patients 50 years old or older. However, the rate of complications was still relatively low, ranging from 4% in patients younger than 59 to 13% in patients 80 or older.

Predicting postoperative pulmonary complications: the sleeping giant stirs

Article Abstract:

A study published in 2001 identified many risk factors for pneumonia in surgery patients. Most studies have focused on the cardiovascular complications of surgery. However, lung complications are just as common and are an important cause of death.
