Garden State Medical Group, New Jersey's largest private medical group practice, has folded as a result of failed negotiations with HIP Health Plan of New Jersey. The battle stemmed from attempts by the Garden State Medical Group's to sever its exclusive relationship with the health maintenance organization. HIP refused the physician group's demands to sign contracts with other managed care organizations.

A group of approximately 200 New Jersey family physicians and specialists have asked the US National Labor Relations Board for the ability to unionize. The physicians argue the health maintenance organization that they work for has tight controls over their private practices which relegates them to 'employee' status. The board will hear their case on Dec 8, 1997.

Novant Health experienced profits for the first time in its Winston-Salem physician practice in 2002 by holding onto its medical groups. One of the changes that it implemented was that it turned to its physicians for more leadership.
