Glucosamine for osteoarthritis

Article Abstract:

Glucosamine is available as a dietary supplement and may be helpful in the treatment of osteoarthritis, but longer trials are required to establish its efficacy. In three short term studies, glucosamine was shown to relieve symptoms better than a placebo, as well as ibuprofen, and better than ibuprofen at the end of an eight-week trial. Few adverse effects were reported in the studies. Dietary supplements in the US do not require approval by the Food and Drug Administration or other government regulation, and the purity of the products is untested.

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)

Article Abstract:

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), an adrenal androgen available as a dietary supplement, may cause serious adverse effects in both men and women. Research data indicate that people who take DHEA may experience feelings of well-being and patients with HIV infection, multiple sclerosis, and lupus had favorable results after taking DHEA. Androgenic effects, such as hirsutism and voice changes, may be irreversible in women. Androgens can stimulate prostate cancer in men.
