Genomic cartography: Presenting the HapMap

Article Abstract:

A map of haplotypes, colloquially called the HapMap is described providing guidance for sampling the human genome in a way that would facilitate the quest for genes that influence susceptibility to disease. It is a logical follow-on from the human genome project and fulfills the need for a new approach to ferreting out genes that participate in complex multigenic disorders such as diabetes mellitus.

A tetraploid twist on the embryonic stem cell

Article Abstract:

Human embryonic stem cells derived by transfer of the nucleus from a somatic cell are considered to have therapeutic potential in contrast with the tetraploid cells. These tetraploid cells are generated by the fusion of a fibroblast and an embryonic stem cell having the behavioral properties of an embryonic stem cell.

Medicine and the racial divide

Article Abstract:

Genetic research has shown that genetic factors that predispose people to specific diseases are not unique to any particular race. For this reason, it may never be possible to use a person's race to assume they may have a particular genetic variation. Only genetic screening will identify these variations.
