The hazards of communal razors

Article Abstract:

The dangers of cross-contamination associated with the sharing of electric razors on hospital wards has been demonstrated by a study of data from 20 wards, accompanied by microbiological sampling in eight wards. A communal electric razor was used for facial shaving in 17 of the wards studied. Although 16 of these wards performed some form of razor cleaning procedure, three of the five wards shown to have contaminated razors had cleaned the razor correctly after use. Since razors can become contaminated with blood from patients carrying the hepatitis B or HIV viruses, they should not be shared.
