Epidemiology or oral contraceptives and cardiovascular disease

Article Abstract:

A change in the formulation of oral contraceptives has reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease in women who take them. Since 1967, oral contraceptives have been manufactured that have one-fourth the amount of estrogen and one-tenth the amount of progestogen as earlier versions. A review of 374 articles published in the medical literature since 1967 revealed that this change has reduced the risk of heart attack and stroke in women. However, women who smoke or have other risk factors for cardiovascular disease still have an increased risk of these conditions.

Ecstasy, MDMA, has increased in popularity as a recreationaldrug over the past six years and there has also been an increase in the number of individualsvisiting A&E departments who have suffered its more unpleasant effects. Nurses have anopportunity to practice support of those individuals rather than aiming to control eradicate andjudge the issue. The drug can cause unwanted psychological changes and dehydration andcollapses are common.

Cardiovascular effects of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, "ecstasy")

Article Abstract:

The drug MDMA ("ecstasy") can have adverse effects on the heart, according to a study of eight healthy people who used the drug in a laboratory setting. People who have heart disease or who take the drug along with alcohol at a party may experience greater adverse effects.
