Enhancement of wound healing by topical treatment with epidermal growth factor

Article Abstract:

Animal studies have shown that the direct application of epidermal growth factor on second degree burns and other wounds accelerated skin regeneration. This drug was tested on people who required skin grafts for burns or reconstructive surgery. The 12 patients were treated with either an antibacterial cream alone or one that contained epidermal growth factor as well. The sites treated with growth factor had an accerlerated rate of skin growth.

Epidermal growth factor enemas with oral mesalamine for mild-to-moderate left-sided ulcerative colitis or proctitis

Article Abstract:

A daily enema containing epidermal growth factor (EGF) may benefit many patients with ulcerative colitis, according to a study of 24 patients. Eighty-three percent of the patients who received a daily enema containing EGF went into remission within two weeks, compared to only 8% of those who received an enema with no EGF. Ulcerative colitis is a severe inflammation of the colon that causes ulcers to form.

Treatment of Menetrier's disease with a monoclonal antibody against the epidermal growth factor receptor

Article Abstract:

Doctors describe the use of an antibody that blocks the epidermal growth factor receptor for treating Menetrier's disease. This disease affects the stomach and may be a precursor of stomach cancer. There is evidence that it may be partially caused by increased levels of epidermal growth factor.
